Mixson Mandolas are unlike anything I have EVER seen or heard before.

I was around during the days of the first prototype.  I recorded music and played music live with John during those days, and I always used to drag all of my guitar and bass player friends to his house to jam because it was a completely different thing if compared to the standard guitar/bass/drums approach and sound.
I remember the sound used to freak people out because they had NEVER heard the tone and texture of the mandola, even though it was played through typical processors and amp/speaker combos.  (John played in stereo thru 2 amps and cabs.)  The resulting sound was a range of what I would describe as that of amazing tube distortion harmonics to a clean sound that was discreetly sweet and clear.  Of course the material that we usually played was John's own compositional arrangements which are reminiscent of something of a cross between Hendrix/Jethro Tull and quite eclectic for the rock or folk enthusiast.

Then I came to realize that John was going to make more of his own instruments with some woodworking tools that he had acquired.  I even lent him money to that end because I knew that he was going to DO it in a serious way.  (I was paid back in full by the way.)  The results are AMAZING.  In the past 10-12 years he painstakingly assembled a process and tooling that rivals what top luthiers are using from design to finishes and hardware. His woodworking knowledge is vast, well defined, and articulate.
The instruments play as well as anything I have ever played.  (Even though my main instrument is drums I do play guitar and bass.)

I truly believe he has achieved his goal in building unique instruments of top quality and caliber. If you seek a really singular luthier-built stringed instrument of high quality, this would not be a disappointing choice in either acoustic or electric versions.

The added bonus is learning new phrasing and structure in chord theory (if you are not already a versed mandolin player), as well as opening new paths to music performance and songwriting possibilities.
